No motor propelled boat or personal watercraft will be permitted to operate on Lake Summit without a current safety permit/sticker issued by the Lake Summit Safety Committee. Such permit may be revoked for proper cause, to include violation of any section of the North Carolina Boating Regulations, or rules applying specifically to Lake Summit as stated below:
Be safe and be considerate. No motorboat or personal watercraft shall be operated at greater than idle speed within 100 feet of a swimmer, skier, raft, boathouse, dock or bridge.
Reckless or unsafe activity by any watercraft is prohibited. Watercrafts should keep to the right, and travel around the lake in a counter-clockwise direction. Slower traffic stay to the right.
Non-powered watercraft (canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats) have the right of way.
Mondamin Cove, Bissell Park Cove, Interlocken Cove, Green River Channel Cove (especially upriver from the South Lake Summit Road bridge), and the Dam Cove are idle speed only areas. Exception: Residents of those coves may ski out of or into their cove.
From one half hour after sunset until 8:00 AM, motorboats shall be operated at idle speed, using proper navigation lights. No Personal Watercraft after sunset. No searchlights are to be directed above lake level. No siren or other mechanical noise maker shall be sounded except in cases of emergency.
Between the hours 10:00 AM and 12:15 PM on Sundays, in consideration of nearby churches and chapel gatherings, motorboats and personal watercraft shall be operated at idle speed.
Motorboats: As of May 1, 2010 per NC Law, (G.S.75A-16.2) A person younger than 26 years old may operate a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater on North Carolina waters only if he or she: Completes and passes a boating safety course that is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and accepted by the Wildlife Resources Commission or… Is accompanied on board by and under the direct supervision of a person who is at least 26 years old or… Is accompanied on board by and under the direct supervision of a person who is at least 18 years old and who has passed an approved boating safety course. Anyone operating a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater must: Carry on board his or her boater education certification card or other proof of compliance with the new law (legal proof of age) and… Make the card or other proof available upon request by an enforcement officer.
Personal Water Craft: As of May 1, 2010 per NC Law, (G.S.75A-13.3) A person younger than 14 years old may not operate a PWC legally A person 14 or 15 years old may operate a PWC only if: He or she has ID with proof of age and boater education certification in his or her possession, or… He or she is accompanied on the PWC by a person who is at least 18 and in compliance with requirements for operating a vessel. It is unlawful for the owner of a PWC to knowingly allow a person under the age of 16 to operate a PWC unless they meet the above requirements. A person 16 or older is not required to have boater education certificate to operate a PWC, but it is recommended.
Any boat or personal watercraft towing a skier, tube, or similar device must have a qualified observer, or must have a rear view mirror affixed to the boat. Only one skier, tube, or similar devise may be towed behind boat or PWC.
Ensure that your boat has all required safety and Personal Floatation Devices (PFD’s). PFD’s must be worn at all times by skiers, riders of tubes, personal and non-powered watercrafts. Any youth under age 13 must be wearing a PFD while in an operating boat.
Alcohol: You are legally considered to be boating while under the influence of alcohol if your BAC is determined to be .08 or greater.
With the exception of short term anchoring for fishing or repairs, anchoring within 50 feet of a dock or boathouse without the owner’s permission is prohibited.
